The aim of the Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) department at Ribblesdale is to encourage lasting pupil enjoyment and curiosity in learning a foreign language and to enable each pupil to reach his or her potential. Pupils are encouraged not only to communicate effectively in the chosen language, but to develop key transferable skiolls such as ICT, literacy and numeracy. All pupils have equal access to learning a language and experieve enjoyment and a sense of acheivement regardless of gender, ability or ethnic origin.

Year 7 Curriculum

Year 8 Curriculum

  • Free time activities

  • The body and illness
  • Food and meals
  • Shopping and prices
  • A visit to Paris

Year 9 Curriculum

French topics include:

  • Keeping fit and healthy living
  • Buying clothing
  • News and current affairs
  • Knowledge of France
  • Home life
  • Finding the way

Spanish (leadning to Entry Level Certificate)

Pupils will study and be assessed on knowledge of the following areas:

  • Personal information
  • Home town
  • Ordering food and drink
  • Occupations

Key Stage 4

Available:

  • GCSE French
  • GCSE Spanish

The following are availabkle and may be offered as required

  • NVQ Language units
  • Entry Level Certificate
  • Foundation Level Certificate

Results

The 2007 Results were outstanding

French 85% A* - C
Spanish 62% A* - C
NVQ 100% Full Level 1 Award

Future Developments

This is an exciting time for both the school and the department with much effort being made to deliver a varied and exciting curriculum.

The following areas are under development:

  • E-linking with French and Spanish schools
  • On-line homework and assessment Language based trips to Spain.
  • Links with the education centre at Blackburn Rovers
  • Preparation of a digital resource bank
