Learning Support Guidance
What can I do to help my child cope with the change from primary school to Ribblesdale?
- The most important thing is to give your child lots of praise and encouragement and to remember that the change from primary to secondary school is a huge step for all, but in particular for pupils with learning difficulties.
- Check your child’s planner regularly. This keeps you in touch with school ensures you are aware of any homework set so that you can ensure that it is done to a good standard.
- Check any spellings your child has been asked to learn using the look/say/cover/write/check method.
- Ensure that your child knows how to say and spell each of the 300 key words on the sheet he/she will be given. This will ensure that most of the written work your child produces will be spelt correctly.
- Listen to your child reading for a minimum of five minutes each evening (little and often is best).
- Help your child to revise for tests by helping him/her to plan revision and testing him/her from exercise books.
- Encourage your child to attend Homework Club every lunchtime from Monday to Thursday in the Learning Centre.
- Help your child to be organised. Check the timetable for the following day and make sure he/she has all the books needed for his/her lessons.
- If your child is having difficulties with homework, please contact Mrs Walker on extension 303 who will be able to help.
