Ribblesdale Sport and Leisure

Work within the Sport and Leisure Department is designed to support, contribute and to complement the aims of the school by providing equality of access to all pupils to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum.

Physical Education aims to provide an enjoyable and satisfying programme, with opportunities for every pupil to develop physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. The PE curriculum offers a comprehensive range of learning experiences to meet the needs of individual pupils and encourage active involvement by all performers, observers, coaches and officials.

Structured and developmental schemes of work provide for progression, challenge and a sense of achievement. The sympathetic selection of learning experiences appropriate to pupils experience, ability and maturity aims to support all pupils in the development of physical competence and promote those skills necessary to effectively plan and evaluate movement and movement-related activities safely and with confidence.

The development of tolerance, a sense of fair play and good sporting behaviour are considered to be essential elements of the learning process. Through active participation in a variety of roles within the activities experienced, pupils will be encourage to appreciate their own and others strengths and weaknesses and to respond appropriately to the needs of individuals and groups.

It is intended that the programme offered, together with an awareness of leisure opportunities within the community will develop those skills and attitudes conducive to involvement in al active and healthy lifestyle.

Year 7 Curriculum

Pupils will experience 4 strands of the National Curriculum Programme of Study, these being, Games, Outdoor and Adventurous, Gymnastic, and Athletic Activities.
Pupils will undertake 12 units of work, which will look to add to their knowledge, skills and understanding of Physical Education.

  • Orienteering

Year 8 Curriculum

As for Year 7

Year 9 Curriclum

Pupils will undertake 7 units of work, which will look to enhance and develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of Physical Education.

Pupils will complete a range of activities from:

  • Netball
  • Football
  • Rugby
  • Hockey
  • Basketball
  • Health Related Fitness
  • Badminton
  • Athletics
  • Tennis
  • Striking and Fielding activities.

Key Stage 4 Curriclum

Core PE

Pupils will undertake a Certificate of Achievement which involves pupils completing a Varity of option units of work.
In order to pass the certificate of achievement, pupils must

  1. Attend Physical Education regularly.
  2. Have an appropriate attitude.
  3. Complete a varied programme of activities.
  4. Undertake a variety of roles within sport. (performer, coach, official)

GCSE Physical Education

Practical component (50%)

Pupils undertake a variety of activities including, swimming, personal fitness, badminton, rounder’s, athletics, netball, football etc. All activities are assessed based on pupil’s personal performance and their understanding of the rules and tactics involved in the game.  Pupils best four marks are put forward to the exam board.

Coursework component (10%)

Pupils undertake an Analysis of Performance on one sport. Pupils have to identify a performers strengths and weaknesses in that sport and work out a training programme to build on their strengths and improve their weaknesses.

Theory component (40% and one timetabled lesson per week)

The theory course comprises of 3 main sections, covering:

  • Factors affecting Participation and Performance
  • The relationship between Health, Fitness and Physical Activity.
  • Risk Assessment in Physical Activity.
